Cityscapes

Artist Statement - Cityscapes

I love and appreciate nature, but I am strongly drawn to the visual complexity and beauty of cityscapes. The geometry and order of buildings attract me.  Light and darkness in a city create brief snapshots highlighting or minimizing elements of our world.  These unique moments grab me emotionally with color, shape and feeling.

The fiery light of a sunset, organic and momentary, blindingly reflecting off a skyscraper, dissolves architecture into nature.  Man-made light burns through darkness, illuminating a way forward, creating eerie moods or dreamlike atmospheres.   A warmly lit porch at night invokes hearth and home.  The haziness of an early morning fog imbues a city with calm, belying the frenzied human activity within it.  These beautiful and fleeting  moments, intersections of the man-made and the natural, represent to me the brevity of life and the fragility of our world.

While the magic light of morning and evening are daily and wistful reminders that time continues and eventually we won’t, painting for me, deliciously stops time.  In a state of “flow” I am open minded and more observant of  the world.  Optimistic by nature, through my art, I wish to share my love of beauty and life.
